Most deck failures start underneath: a ledger pulling off the house, posts rotting in wet concrete, footings that heave in a hard freeze. Watch a Calder deck go together, then tap a number to see each layer.

Footings below the frost line
Concrete poured deep enough that a hard January freeze can't heave it, sized to your soil and inspected before anything sits on it.

Posts on steel bases
Posts never sit buried in concrete. A steel base keeps the end grain dry, which is where rot starts.

Doubled beams, bolted through
Two plies, through-bolted to every post. Not toenailed, not balanced on top and hoping.

Every joist taped
Butyl tape on top of each joist so rain can't soak into the wood under your boards and rot the frame from the top down.

Flashed against water, bolted into the rim joist and braced with lateral load brackets. This is where most collapses begin.

How much does a deck cost in Knoxville?
Most of our decks land between $9,000 and $30,000. Size, material and height drive the number more than anything else. Use the estimator above for a ballpark, and you'll get a fixed price in writing after the site visit.
Wood or composite?
Pressure-treated wood costs less on day one but needs cleaning and sealing every two to three years. Composite costs more up front, doesn't splinter, and mostly needs a wash with a hose. We bring samples of both to the site visit so you can see and feel them.
Do I need a permit?
Almost every attached or raised deck does. We pull the permit, schedule every inspection and meet the inspector on site. It's all included in your price.
How long does it take?
Design and permit usually take two to four weeks. The build itself is five to ten working days for most decks, a little longer for hillside decks and screened porches.
Our yard is really steep. Can you still build?
Yes, and it's most of what we do. Steep lots need deeper footings and taller engineered posts, and that's reflected in the price. It almost never means regrading your yard.
What does the warranty cover?
Twelve years on our workmanship: framing, fasteners, railings and stairs. The material warranty from the board manufacturer sits on top of that, and composite boards often carry 25 years or more.
